Before we discuss Daylily Little Grapette, a few important items as a backdrop for this post.
I first wrote of my frustration with the daylily here.
I did a feature on the ‘Joan Senior’ daylily here.
And eventually swore them off for good here.
Now a current day update:
I still have a bunch of Daylily ‘Happy Returns’ and in fact, just divided a bunch to fill a new section of the garden. You’ll never see any photos of these plants because they suck but I can’t bring myself to dispose of them because they take up space with no effort. They will be eradicated one day but that time has not yet arrived.
‘Joan Senior’ couldn’t hide from the deer for long and she met her untimely death in a fit of rage back in 2012. I was an angry gardener back then.
The only other daylily in my garden currently is Daylily Little Grapette which I’ve had since 2007. There have been many times when I was close to disposing of these as well since the deer consistently ate the blooms but they some how held on. And I think I’m glad that they did.
The current home for all of the Daylily Little Grapette is in front of Penstemon ‘Husker’s Red’ and I love the color combo.
I think the deer ignored these last year as a means for the universe to tell me that this combo was killer and I got it right. It may all fall to shit soon and we’ll see in a few weeks.
Daylily Little Grapette put on a massive flush of bloom in late early/mid July here in zone 6B and they keep on coming for a good two weeks or so.
I try my best to remove the “one day lasting” blooms during the blooming period to keep them looking neat and tidy, but be forewarned, your fingers will be massively stained and it isn’t all that easy to remove said stains.
This daylily is considered to be a dwarf daylily since it gets no taller than 16″ and while the claims are that it is a “rebloomer”, I’ve never witnessed it. Beyond that, it is like all other daylillies, kind of nice in bloom and then eh, the remainder of the gardening season.
Now having said that, here is your chance to sell me on a daylily you love. Put it in the comments and I promise, at a minimum, to research it and let you know what I think.
Will I ever add it to my garden?
Baby steps my friend.
What could be better than a daylily named after me?! H. Jacki Kropf
No rebloom here in MI but striking in bloom and easy to color coordinate.
Jacki – great color on this one, how tall does it get? But more importantly, I need to know how you got your name on this one? Very, very cool!
It gets about 25-30″ tall. The hybridized named it for me at the request of my husband. ❤️
How frickin cool is that! I definitely prefer the taller varieties where the foliage can be hidden in the back. Congrats!
A lovely plant – loving the colour combo of the flowers! If only they tasted disgusting to deer! I grow a few, and am always on the lookout for rich, dark colours, so will watch suggestions from others closely!
Thanks HHG! Don’t know if I can be swayed but will try to be as open as possible.
The best daylily is the one in someone else’s garden.
Now that we’ve gotten that straight, your grape guy is very pretty, especially in combo with the penstemon. And it’s in someone else’s garden (yours). So I like it.
Kate – best response ever.
Great combination…it’s always nice when neighbors bring out the best in each other. I always deadhead my most favorite daylilies for an hour or so after dinner when it has cooled off. It’s much easier to snip them off when they are intact as opposed to all slippery and slimy the following morning. Plus, it lets me wander the garden and see other things to put on my to do list for the next day.
I try to do the same but it never comes to fruition. I envy your dedication and it quite therapeutic as well I’m sure. Well maybe not the to-do part.
Your Little Grapette looks fantastic with the penstemon! I love daylilies and my favorite is Indian Giver. It has the most beautiful large purple blooms with delicate white edging and a bright yellow/green throat. It has an incredible number of blooms on each plant and they seem to just keep coming. Here are a few links to pictures of them that I took last summer. http://www.garden-share.com/photo/summer-beauties-2?context=album&albumId=3193295%3AAlbum%3A2728828 and http://www.garden-share.com/photo/my-favorite-daylilies-1?context=album&albumId=3193295%3AAlbum%3A2727772.
Thanks Clare! The color on those is tremendous! Great for playing off of other blooms I’m sure. Thanks for the share.
Edna Selman. Perfect in every way.
Nice color on that one Barb. Is it as orange as it looks in some photos?
No, not orange at all in my hot climate, or even when the weather is cool. It is a warm peach, the kind that looks lovely with sky blue, yellow or even pink. The flowers aren’t huge but there are tons of them. The ruffles glitter. It reblooms.
Nice. That color sounds a lot easier to play off of with color. Thanks!
Omighosh, we could NOT be more different! I love daylilies and have each of the ones you mentioned plus dozens of other named and unnamed cultivars. Heck I even have the downside of the driveway devoted to them… all 60 by 12 square feet of it. It is a show stopper…okay traffic stopper…cars drive by extra slow just to look at them. If you don’t love them, give them away. Trade you a japanese iris for any of them!
Sounds awesome, do you have a pic? Maybe I’m looking at the wrong ones? Then again, maybe not. Ha.
