Each season has its own unique beauty in the garden and dammit, that is why I love this gardening thing so much. It is never dull and in constant motion in a wonderfully subtle way.
With that theme in mind, there are some photo sets below depicting the same section of garden at different times this year. The first photo in each set is from current day. The subsequent photos then move backwards in time throughout the 2014 gardening season.
Enjoy.
Eupatorium maculatum (Joe Pye Weed) in front of Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’:
Sedum ‘Autumn Fire’, Viburnum carlesii ‘Aurora’, Miscanthus purpurascens (Flame Grass) and Miscanthus ‘Gracillimus’:
Panicum ‘Rots’, Viburnum bracteatum ‘Emerald Lustre’, Miscanthus ‘Variegatus’:
Weigela ‘Wine and Roses’, Purple coneflower, Perovskia (Russian Sage):
Similar plants as listed above but from a different angle:
Barberry, Iris versicolor, Clethra ‘Hummingbird’, Monarda (Bee Balm), etc.:
A little bit of everything:
Looking through Physocarpus (Ninebark) ‘Diablo’ to the aforementioned Joe Pye Weed/Miscanthus combo:
Great photos! They reflect the care with which you constructed your beds for year-round interest.
Thanks Kris! Of course most of it was by accident.
Great idea to show the same areas in different seasons. And you’ve done a great job of planning for all seasons.
Thank you Beth! It was fun to pull all of the pics together.
It’s interesting to evaluate my own reactions to the various stages. Each setting has kind of an obvious “oh, wow” stretch of time when everything is at its prime and it’s very easy to see the beauty…the colors are so vibrant and the plants are fully formed. The other stages show either promise or decline and have a more subtle beauty. I enjoyed all the pictures a lot.
Thanks Michaele! I went through the same emotions as well. I do miss the “oh wow” a ton!!!
Totally agree with you in your first two sentences! Enjoyed the
section changes that took place for you in this years garden season.
Thanks Deborah! It was a ton of fun just piecing it together.
Awesome……….thanks for the enjoyment and inspiration
Carol – thanks for stopping by and the kind words!
Nice!
Love your garden…specially the photos you made of a border through the seasons! It is so rewarding but so hard to keep up with!
I also want to say too bad about the tomatoes…but I want to encourage you to pick them all and cook the ones you can’t eat, and freeze them for another day. I chop them up and sautee them until they fall apart, you can add a tablespoon of olive oil, then let them cool and pack in 2 cup containers, or even zip lock sandwich bags. I do this while I wash the dishes, goes quick.
In upstate NY it was not a great year for tomatoes but I did get about 1 qt fresh tomato sauce.
Thanks.
