A nice looking ornamental grass – Miscanthus ‘Gracillimus’ to be exact.
Until you pull back the curtain and see that only the front half of the grass is actually growing.
The blame falls squarely on my underachieving kids as I let them cut down most of the ornamental grasses this past spring.
So your lesson for today – don’t trust kids with power tools, they will only disappoint.
Cute…but where/how did they go wrong? Didn’t cut it low/high enough? At the right time? How did they achieve the half and half look?
I have to admit that the only miscanthus I have stayed with is ‘Adagio’ because I find its size just right and it doesn’t even remotely think about reseeding. Otherwise, it’s panicums, fountain grasses and my great love, Pink Muhly Grass.
Michaele – deep down I guess I know it wasn’t them … although the back side of the grass was cut at an awkward angle so not sure if that is what did it. Of course I noticed this and failed to take corrective action.
Did your kids get bored halfway through the task ? I always remember my youngest asking to be excused from chores so that he could study for his exams, using a set of cd rome I had bought for him. I found them all years afterwards at the back of a drawer – and every one still had the cellophane wrapper intact !
Jane – they did get bored and me yelling at them through a megaphone didn’t seem to help very much.
