This weekend was the first time I noticed that the garden was starting to “pull it all together”. By that I mean, it is becoming less and less about the individual plants and more about how they act together as a whole. A collection of plants is becoming a “garden”.
Here are some samples of the “garden”:
Panicum (Switch Grass) ‘Rotstrahlbusch’, Monarda (Bee Balm) and Juniper ‘Wichita Blue’ |
Achillea ‘Moonwalker’, Sedum ‘Matrona’ and Sorghastrum (Indian Grass) ‘Sioux Blue’ |
Too many mention |
Astilbe ‘Deutschland’ and Physocarpus (Ninebark) ‘Diablo’ |
Mountain Mint, Panicum (Switch Grass) ‘Rotstrahlbusch’ and Monarda (Bee Balm) |
Itea ‘Henry’s Garnet’ and Miscanthus ‘Variegatus’ |
Itea ‘Henry’s Garnet’, Viburnum ‘Emerald Lustre’ and Amsonia (Eastern Bluestar) ‘Tabernaemontana’ |
Again, too many to mention |
Viburnum ‘Aurora’ and Miscanthus ‘Gracillimus’ |
Itea ‘Henry’s Garnet’, Chasmanthium latifolium (Northern Sea Oats) and Panicum ‘Northwind’ |
Geranium ‘Brookside’, Asclepias Incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) and Itea ‘Henry’s Garnet’ |
Astilbe ‘Deutschland’ and Nepeta (Catmint) ‘Walker’s Low’ |
Little of everything |
Angerus sisterium and Runningus brotherium |
Revengus brotherium (rare cultivar) and Runningus sisterium |
Slipanslideium |
Slipanslideum (Male version, less hardy) |
Keep these plants active and outdoors and they agree to photos like this:
And they even eat lunch sitting NEXT to each other:
A great weekend on many fronts.

It’s beautiful! Bee balm grows almost like a weed around here… I don’t know if that’s normal or not but I love it anyway 🙂
You have a beautiful garden all year long. I wish you were closer, my 10 acres scream for your touch!
It’s nice to see the last 6 pictures of your rare garden plants. My 4 have just discovered the “Slipnslidium” this past week. It’s a keeper!
Your garden is certainly coming together! Seeing the kids enjoy the space also adds another dimension.
Read through some of your past posts. Love your Peony, surprised the deer go after it. Mine are untouched though my Penstemons are eaten to a nub. Your gardens are shaping up nicely– full and lush– can’t believe the Astible do so well in the same bed as the Nepeta. Gotta love Physocarpus!
I added a slipandslideum to my garden this weekend too. I found it at Target of all places. I think I’ll keep my eyes open for another one though because ours is a dwarf version.
Great collection of plants happily growing and filling in nicely!
Also fun to see brother and sister having a ball together!!
Deer Passion – bee balm growing everywhere here too and it is awesome for filling in empty spaces.
JJ – I don’t charge too much for consultation so let’s do it. Ha.
Mia – the slip n slide was pretty awesome, but inevitably it will brake and we’ll need a new one.
Kris – yeah, the kids are OK, almost as good as the plants.
Janet – the dirty secret with the Nepeta, they are in part sand which comes from the construction of the sidewalk. The only area in my yard that drains well.
Chad – ours was from Toys R Us, one of these years I want to invest in a real good one that holds up for more than a few uses.
Deb – Brother and sister getting along is always cherished, even if it doesn’t last long.
I would be very thankful if you continue with quality what you are serving right now with your blog…I really enjoyed it…and i really appreciate to you for this….its always pleasure to read so….Thanks for sharing!!
