Is there a more encouraging sign in spring than the emergence of the peony stems?
These tough as nails performers come back year after year without fail; and that’s saying something when you have conditions like mine.
Soon, we’ll see these:
Turn into these:
Unless you’re like me and the deer decide to chow down one night on every single one of the buds on three different plants:
That WILL not happen this year.
Guaranteed.
I was enjoying the same view this week in my garden. I was very happy that the peonies finally come out.
Peonies are such wonderful plants that, having a lifespan of a hundred years or so, usually outlive those who plant them. I love the emergence of the peonies every spring, and have wondered about the gardeners who planted those in old or abandoned gardens. It’s interesting to think that long after we’ve been forgotten, our peonies may coninue this spring ritual to delight gardeners not yet born.
The peonies I transplanted from my late grandmother’s home are coming up and have blooms to boot! Pretty surprising for a recent transplant. They’re gorgeous flowers! Enjoy yours!
