Included below is a tour of Amsonia Blue Ice from my garden. It runs from May through September of this year.
I’ve included the actual dates each of the photos were taken to show the long season of interest for this native perennial.
Some notes about this perennial:
- Averages 12″ in height
- Averages 24″ in width
- Hardy in zones 3-9
- Prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade
- Blooms in late spring as noted above
- Deer resistant
- Native perennial
- Trimming back after bloom creates a fuller plant later in the season
What a beautiful plant! I love the blue flowers. Does this plant stay small? From your pictures, it looks like it would complement my eucalyptus tree if I planted it under it.
Mia – it gets to be about a foot high and 18 inches wide. It kicks major butt.
I had a variety a while back that was a very rampant reseeder…how is this one? I particularly like it in its budded up stage where the blue looks so dark.
I have seen no signs of reseeding to date but will be keeping an eye out for sure. I think I’d welcome it.
I have to admit, my Amsonia plants were impressive this year and
I have to thank you for introducing me to these wonderful perennials! *_*
Now that is awesome to hear! Always fun to get others to try different plants. Sweet!
Loving these “case studies” of individual plants. I’m always looking for this kind of info/visualization of how a plant behaves across the whole season when I’m interested in adding it to my garden, but there usually isn’t a lot out there. Thank you!
Laura – thanks for stopping by! I enjoy putting these case studies together as they help me to decide which plants are worthy and where they best fit in.
